David Letterman laughs as he relaxes with friends and drinks a Stroh's Beer in his hometown of Indianapolis just before Christmas 1979. This is a rare look at 32-year-old Letterman, just before he got his own daytime TV talk show, The David Letterman Show, with NBC in 1980. The photograph was published in People Magazine. Letterman told People at the time, “I keep waiting for someone to tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘Okay, buddy, give us the money back, NBC wants your new house, and you have to go home to Indianapolis.
